Configuring Synthetic Fiber Channel


Since VMM 2012 R2, Synthetic Fiber Channel has been added to support Guest Fiber Channel in Hyper-V.

The VMM feature, which makes use of the SMI-S provider, allows you to assign a Virtual Fiber Channel Adapter in the guest VM with cut-down zone management.

Virtual Fiber Channel supports single/multiple storage arrays connected to single/multiple fabrics.

Note

Multiple storage arrays connected to multiple fabrics would provide dual-redundant paths to storage arrays.

Getting ready

In order to be able to use Virtual Fiber Channel, confirm that the following are in place:

  • SAN, Fiber Channel switches, and HBA NIC's firmware and drivers are up to date
  • SAN are configured to present logical units (LUNs)
  • SAN SMI-S provider is installed and configured
  • NPIV are configured and enabled on the Fiber Channel switches and HBAs
  • Hyper-V Servers must be running Windows Server 2012 or newer
