QlikView for Developers

Chapter 2. What's New in QlikView 12?

Since the previous version of this book was published in 2012, the Qlik ecosystem has expanded significantly. In this chapter, we will bring you up to speed with the changes over the past few years.

If QlikView 12 is your first entry into the world of Qlik then you might be tempted to skip this chapter. However, we highly recommend that, even as a new developer you, at least read the What is new in the Qlik product portfolio? section.

We will start with a look at some of the most important changes in QlikView 12. Although QlikView 12 Desktop is the main focus of this book, we will also discuss the changes and improvements in QlikView 12 Server and Publisher.

Next, we will take a look at the broader picture and see how the Qlik product portfolio has changed in the past few years. We will learn what these new products do and how they might fit into your Qlik deployment.

Finally, as this book is itself an update, we will finish this chapter...

How is QlikView 12 different from QlikView 11?

Apart from a restyled application icon, at first glance QlikView 12 looks remarkably similar to its predecessor. Under the hood, however, many improvements and fixes have been realized, and in this section we will take a high level view at some of those changes.

Common QIX Engine

The main difference compared to previous versions is that the underlying engine of QlikView has been replaced with the updated QIX Engine 2.0. This is the same engine that powers the other products in the Qlik portfolio (Qlik Sense Enterprise and the Qlik Analytics Platform, discussed later). Besides performance improvements over the previous version, this common engine makes it easier to share data models between QlikView and the other Qlik products, notably Qlik Sense. The shared code base of the engine also ensures that future investments that Qlik does in features, performance, security, and connectivity can be easily back ported to QlikView.

What is new in the Qlik product portfolio?

Since the publication of the previous version of this book in 2012, the Qlik product suite has changed and expanded significantly, both through acquisitions and the introduction of new products. In this section, we will look at some of the most important changes and we will look at how these fit into the bigger picture.

Qlik Sense Enterprise and the Qlik Analytics Platform

Initially billed as QlikView.Next and anticipated to be an update of QlikView, Qlik Sense was launched as a new, separate product in September 2014. Regular users of QlikView will immediately notice that the frontend of Qlik Sense looks very different from QlikView:

Qlik Sense Enterprise and the Qlik Analytics Platform

With the introduction of Qlik Sense, Qlik suddenly had two similar products out in the market, which they dubbed the two product strategy. This strategy positions Qlik Sense not as an updated version of QlikView, but rather as a separate self-service visualization solution that co-exists with QlikView. At the same time...

How do the products in the Qlik product portfolio fit together?

We have seen that the Qlik product portfolio has expanded significantly in the past few years. At the time of QlikView 11 for Developers, there was only QlikView. Nowadays there is a complete range of products and add-ons.

The following diagram gives a high-level overview of how all the products fit together. The base is QlikView and the QAP, both of these use the same QIX Engine. The QAP underpins Qlik Sense Enterprise, which adds a frontend client and collaboration features. NPrinting can be used for static reporting on either QlikView or Qlik Sense. The Qlik Web Connectors, Rest Connector, and DataMarket let both QlikView and Qlik Sense ingest external, web-based data. Geographical analysis in both QlikView and Qlik Sense can be done with the Qlik GeoAnalytics add-on.

How do the products in the Qlik product portfolio fit together?

What is new in QlikView 12 for Developers?

The previous version of this book, QlikView 11 for Developers, has been out since 2012. The book has been very well received and we know that you should not change a winning formula. Besides this chapter and Chapter 4, Data Sources which introduces some new data sources, little has been changed other than correcting the various errata that have been collected through the years.

We also decided to change the book's title to be version-agnostic, since most of the concepts we aim to teach in the book apply for the software in general and are not dependent on the version (11, 11.2, 12, and so on). We also made sure the exercises are also relevant not only for QlikView 11 or QlikView 12, but for QlikView in general. However, there may be small UI changes between versions, but from what we've experienced those UI differences are not very significant at the time of writing.

Since QlikView and Qlik Sense share the same QIX Engine, this also means...

Summary

A lot has happened in the world of Qlik since the previous version of this book was published in November 2012. In this chapter, we've caught up with the most important changes in QlikView 12. We have learned how the Qlik ecosystem has expanded and how all of these products fit together in the bigger picture. We have also gotten a high level overview of the changes that were made in the revised version of this book.

In the next chapter, we will get hands-on with QlikView 12 and we will develop a small proof-of-concept document.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
