Python Penetration Testing Cookbook

Setting Up a Python Environment

In this chapter, we will cover the following recipes:

  • Setting up a Python environment in Linux
  • Setting up a Python environment in macOS
  • Setting up a Python environment in Windows

Introduction

In this chapter, we will learn how to set up Python on your machine. Most operating systems except Windows already have Python interpreter installed by default. To check that Python interpreter is installed, you can open a command-line window and type python into the prompt and hit Enter key--you will get a result like this:

You can get the latest up-to-date and current versions of Python binaries and source code from the official website of Python--https://www.python.org/.

Setting up a Python environment in Linux

Let's go through the step by step process of setting up your Python environment on your Linux system. First, we can learn to install Python if it's not installed by default.

Getting ready

As we have many package managers in different flavors of Linux distributions such as apt/apt-get and dpkg. For Debian-based distributions such as Ubuntu, yum (Yellowdog) for CentOS/RHEL, and zypper and yast for SuSE Linux, these package managers will help us to install Python with ease in Linux distros. With this, you have to just issue a command and package managers will search for the required package and its dependencies, download the packages, and install them in your system.

...

Setting up a Python environment in macOS

Likewise in a Linux environment, macOS also have Python installed by default. But you need to get an idea of the basic installation steps as it will help with updates and reinstallations.

Getting ready

First of all, install Xcode from the App Store, if you haven't installed it already. And then update the command-line tools with the following command:

$ xcode-select --install

Also, we need to install Homebrew, a package manager for macOS, for that open terminal and type the following command:

$ ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
...

Setting up a Python environment in Windows

Python interpreter is not installed in Windows by default. So we have to download and install Python.

How to do it...

We can download the Python from the official website and install it in your system. Execute the following steps:

  1. Go to the official website of Python (http://python.org/download/) and download the latest version of Windows MSI installer.
  2. Run the installer.
  3. You can select the option to Install launcher for all users (recommended) and click Install Now to finish the installation.
  1. After installation, it would be better if you could add the default Python directories of your version to the PATH.

If you have installed Python in C:\Python36\, you should add the following...

Key benefits

  • Learn to detect and avoid various types of attack that put system privacy at risk
  • Enhance your knowledge of wireless application concepts and information gathering through practical recipes
  • Learn a pragmatic way to penetration-test using Python, build efficient code, and save time

Description

Penetration testing is the use of tools and code to attack a system in order to assess its vulnerabilities to external threats. Python allows pen testers to create their own tools. Since Python is a highly valued pen-testing language, there are many native libraries and Python bindings available specifically for pen-testing tasks. Python Penetration Testing Cookbook begins by teaching you how to extract information from web pages. You will learn how to build an intrusion detection system using network sniffing techniques. Next, you will find out how to scan your networks to ensure performance and quality, and how to carry out wireless pen testing on your network to avoid cyber attacks. After that, we’ll discuss the different kinds of network attack. Next, you’ll get to grips with designing your own torrent detection program. We’ll take you through common vulnerability scenarios and then cover buffer overflow exploitation so you can detect insecure coding. Finally, you’ll master PE code injection methods to safeguard your network.

Who is this book for?

If you are a developer with prior knowledge of using Python for penetration testing and if you want an overview of scripting tasks to consider while penetration testing, this book will give you a lot of useful code for your toolkit.

What you will learn

  • •Learn to configure Python in different environment setups.
  • •Find an IP address from a web page using BeautifulSoup and Scrapy
  • •Discover different types of packet sniffing script to sniff network packets
  • •Master layer-2 and TCP/ IP attacks
  • •Master techniques for exploit development for Windows and Linux
  • •Incorporate various network- and packet-sniffing techniques using Raw sockets and Scrapy

Covers most of the penetration testing scenarios. A lot of out of the box pen testing recipes.

It's like if you already know how to grill a steak… and you already know how to boil a lobster… then someone sells you a book on how to make a new dish called “surf & turf”. Book assumes you know pen testing. And assumes you know Python. So here’s a quick few pages on how to do some pen test tricks in Python! Here are my issues with this book (I bought the Kindle edition yesterday and finished it already): (1) its pretty short at 206 total pages, with way too many of those few pages spent on preface, intro, table of contents, setting up Python…. I didn't even get the first pen test topic until 21% into the book. Not a lot of substance here. (2) Its a sampling of a few pen test topics, not, in my opinion, a reasonably comprehensive “cookbook”. (3) The pen test tasks/concepts the recipes are intended to solve for are barely described. For example, the concept of IP Spoofing is described in literally just two sentences before diving into the code example. (4) The code examples are all about “what” and not about “why”. “Import these modules, declare these variables, type this function, then run the script!” No explanation at all about the modules themselves, no explanation of the Python code samples to help you understand why it works, no point of view around how this code would be used in the context of an actual pen test.I had high hopes for this. I’m a big fan of Packt, and I own and recommend many of their titles. But I didn’t get much value out of this one.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter.
