In Chapter 4, Stored Procedures, we saw how to implement functions and procedures using the PL/pgSQL language. PostgreSQL allows developers to implement their executable code in pretty much any language they want. In order to demonstrate this, this chapter will show you how to implement code using Perl 5 and Java.
In particular, this chapter will focus on:
- PL/Perl and PL/Java as possible implementation languages
- The re-implementation of some of the code discussed in Chapter 4, Stored Procedures, using both of the above languages
- The differences between using a scripting language and a compiled language in server-side programming and deployment
