Book structure

If I were using this book, I would do the following:

  1. Start with the mock exams and chapter reviews (noting your answers on a separate piece of paper or an electronic device).
  2. Check your answers against the Assessment section.
  3. If you miss something, check out the relevant chapters and support articles and freshen up. If you get a question right, you may not need to spend so much time on that topic.
  4. Plan your studying based on your weaknesses or areas in which you're less familiar.

But everybody learns differently and you may best benefit from working through the book, front to back. In that case, here's how the book is organized:

  • There is one chapter per skill measured, and each subtopic is covered in a section within that chapter.
  • Each chapter ends with a Questions (with two practice questions) section and a Further reading section with links to the relevant documentation. I'd recommend checking out the documentation for any topic you're uncertain about.
  • There are two mock exams at the end of the book, with an Assessments chapter at the very end with answers to all chapter reviews and the two exams. Each question's answer is supported with an explanation and a link to more information (this is more up to date than print can be, so check when needed).

This book assumes a general familiarity with Microsoft 365 apps and services, such as SharePoint and Azure Active Directory. Taking the MS-100: Microsoft 365 Identity and Services exam first is advisable, and will help make sure you have a foundational knowledge of some of the core Microsoft 365 concepts you'll lean on in the MS-101 exam.
