Retention policies help ensure that your organization is mitigating risks that are concerned with breach or litigation by retaining data for the appropriate period of time based on its type. They also help you comply with industry and internal policies regarding data retention. Furthermore, because all of the content should have a defined lifespan, retention policies also help keep your data current by keeping it for as long as it's needed and then deleting the data at the end of its retention period.
You can create retention policies in either the Microsoft 365 Compliance Center (compliance.microsoft.com | Policies | Retention) or the Office 365 Security & Compliance Center (protection.office.com | Data governance | Retention).
