Implementing Azure Cloud Design Patterns

Compute Design and Management

In the last chapter, I tried to give you a first insight into the Azure platform with a comprehensive introduction. Now, the question arises is how is it going? At least from the viewpoint of the software architect, the question is easy to answer: first, we must make decisions about the technologies used.

OK, now I have to be honest. There is no simple answer. The reasons for this are:

  • The large number of available technologies
  • The ability to combine offered technologies (typical example: Azure Service Fabric - also known as Azure microservices with Azure Container Services)

But let us return to the keyword decisions now. The decisions that we have to make as a software architect are usually in two areas:

  • Compute: Compute is the area in which you deploy (host) your applications. This can, for example, be done as an Azure VM, but it is...

IaaS I (Azure VMs)

If you want to run your services within Azure and Microsoft has no Platform as a Service (PaaS) or Software as a Service (SaaS) offering for that specific service, it is necessary to implement an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution in your environment.

Azure VMs is the IaaS offer from Azure. With VMs (based on Windows or Linux) you have the flexibility to realize your own workloads. These workloads include, in addition to the ability to deploy applications in the cloud, development and testing scenarios and also some enterprise workloads based on Red Hat, Ubuntu, SAP, IBM, and a lot more.

The basic idea behind this offer we now know, but how should we start now? If we look at the whole from the viewpoint of the software architect, the answer is relatively simple: we have to do some planning tasks.

The tasks are as follows:

  • Define the workloads for your...

IaaS II (Azure Container Services)

Azure Container Services are a new variant of the classical Azure IaaS offer from Azure (descripted in the first section of this chapter), and they also use virtual machines as the technological base.

Two versions of the Azure IaaS are offered, and both are based on virtual machines, but Azure Container Services has some advantages over the older solution due to its additional functionality.

I will now take a closer look at these advantages and introduce Azure Container Services in detail.

What is an Azure Container Service?

An Azure Container Service helps you to create, configure, or manage a cluster of VMs. These clusters are preconfigured to run applications in so-called containers.

OK...

PaaS I (Azure App Services)

In the last two sections of this chapter, I have given you the most important facts about the offers in the area Azure IaaS. Now, we are leaving this area in the direction of the PaaS area.

What is a PaaS solution? A PaaS solution is a service or a complete service environment that allows you to deploy and run your own applications.

Let's go to the actual subject of this section: the Azure App Services. Azure App Services are defined as a service environment and are also a part of the Azure Execution Models.

Let's take a look at the first diagram:

As you can see, the Azure App Services currently consists of the following elements:

  • Web Apps: Web apps is simply the new name for the Azure websites execution model and does not really differ in its functionality from the previous component (by combining it with other app service elements...

PaaS II (Azure Service Fabric, also known as Azure microservices)

Azure Service Fabric is a PaaS offer for distributed systems that simplifies the packing, provisioning, and management of scalable and reliable microservices. Before we start with a deep analysis, we should deal with the microservice architecture in general.

Let's take a look at the first diagram:

Core elements of this architecture are the services (or microservices). The services are defined by the following characteristics:

  • A service is small, which means a service offers only one function in contrast to the application with many functions.
  • A service is independent. This has several meanings for our work:
    • Each service has a separate code base, and this without the need to share the same technology stack, libraries, or frameworks. You can use, for example, C# for the first, Java for the second, and a JavaScript...

Summary

In this chapter, we were introduced to the basic architectures behind the compute offers from the Azure platform (Azure VMs, Azure Container Services, Azure App Services, and Azure Service Fabric). We have also learned that services never act alone, but rather in the interaction of various Azure resources.

In the next chapter, we will learn all about Azure data services (basic knowledge, architecture, and use cases).

Key benefits

  • • Master architectural design patterns in Azure.
  • • Get hands-on with implementing design patterns.
  • • Implement best practices for improving efficiency and security

Description

A well designed cloud infrastructure covers factors such as consistency, maintenance, simplified administration and development, and reusability. Hence it is important to choose the right architectural pattern as it has a huge impact on the quality of cloud-hosted services. This book covers all Azure design patterns and functionalities to help you build your cloud infrastructure so it fits your system requirements. This book initially covers design patterns that are focused on factors such as availability and data management/monitoring. Then the focus shifts to complex design patterns such as multitasking, improving scalability, valet keys, and so on, with practical use cases. The book also supplies best practices to improve the security and performance of your cloud. By the end of this book, you will thoroughly be familiar with the different design and architectural patterns available with Windows Azure and capable of choosing the best pattern for your system.

Who is this book for?

This book is targeted at cloud architects and cloud solution providers who are looking for an extensive guide to implementing different patterns for the deployment and maintenance of services in Microsoft Azure. Prior experience with Azure is required as the book is completely focused on design patterns.

What you will learn

  • • Learn to organize Azure access
  • • Design the core areas of the Azure Execution Model
  • • Work with storage and data management
  • • Create a health endpoint monitoring pattern
  • • Automate early detection of anomalies
  • • Identify and secure Azure features

This is a poorly written book which is more or less a short description / introduction to the different Azure services available. Microsoft’s official documentation provides you that just fine. I had hoped this book would go more into details on best practices, patterns, do’s and dont’s etc.

One of those books written in an afternoon. Copy and paste from official documentation. Zero depth, experience, lessons learned, real-life use cases. I could maybe see like 3 patterns (on 5 pages). Rubbish really.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.
