FL Studio Cookbook

Chapter 2. Using Browser

In this chapter, we will cover:

  • Working with Browser
  • Getting new sounds in Browser

Introduction

FL Studio Browser is a file listing of all of the WAV and MP3 sounds that you are able to add to your project. Bear in mind that we are not referring to an Internet browser of any sort; this is where we can browse our collection of sounds. The Browser is very important because it provides quick access to your library of WAV and MP3 sounds in an intuitive manner. You want to keep your Browser organized and labeled correctly to keep your workflow at an optimum level. It also holds all of your current project data and presets, and is a quick way to find older projects. The FL Studio Browser automatically synchronizes with your file path on your computer, and we will review exactly what that means in this chapter.

Working with Browser

In this recipe, you will come to understand the files and parameters within the FL Studio Browser. You can accumulate a wide range of sounds and build your own sound library. FL Studio also comes with its own factory sounds to get you started (25 folders in total in the factory Browser list, which also includes a plethora of presets and functions). This is also the area where FL Studio automatically keeps presets, projects, SoundFonts, automation curves, WAV files, the undo history button, the speech synthesizer, and the like. This is also where you can preview sounds while your mix is playing, so it is crucial to understand the Browser while building your track and adding additional sounds to it. When you add sounds from the Browser into the step sequencer, it automatically becomes a channel in the step sequencer, which is the building block of all the sounds in your given project.

Getting ready

In order to get started with using the Browser, you need to open up FL Studio...

Getting new sounds in Browser

This recipe will walk you through the task of finding new sounds on web and importing these sounds into your Browser window.

How to do it…

The Browser in FL Studio is directly correlated to the FL Studio installation path on your given computer system. For example, in a PC environment, you can view the FL Studio path at C:\Program Files\Image-Line\FL Studio 11\Data\Patches. When you arrive at the Patches folder on your actual computer file hierarchy, please keep in mind that on FL Studio, the Browser is directly related to it. You are able to add any WAV or MP3 files that you desire, and you can organize them, name them, and place them in a dedicated folder, like anything else you organize on your computer. Similar to organizing documents, photos, and music, the file path that leads to Patches is where you will organize your wave samples and other pertinent files. As stated previously, it can be a great idea to store WAV or MP3 files on an external hard...

I actually bought this as a gift for a family member and that uses FL Studio products. He LOVES it and said it's something that just made the process of creation so much easier. FL Studio is not a super intuitive program, however, it is powerful. This book just cut through the confusion. Thank you.

FL Studio CookbookHey everyone, If you know me and know my music, my style and the amount of effort that I go through to give props where props are due then you know I take my music seriously. So, I'm writing this for anyone that is curious as well as for those that are either professional music producers or rookies just getting into the music scene. Of all the books, PDF's and websites such as MusicGoat postings {which are awesome BTW} that I have read to help productions, none of them have encompassed as much in one solid place and in such an easy way as Shaun Friedman's "FL Studio Cookbook". Now, I've read many books including having purchased the Official "FL Studio Bible" but none have come close to how in-depth Shaun Friedman comes in explaining the details of creating your music masterpiece as the FL Studio Cookbook. Shaun explains everything in crucially specific detail that even music hobbyists can find something that can help them sound amazing. Shaun starts with showing you how to create the ideal set-up for efficiency as well as for promoting the most creativity. He then leads straight into installation which is crazy because not many tutorial books actually teach you how to install AND then manipulate the directory folders so that you can use the most out of your library set-up. This is extremely helpful because I took over a year to organize over 500GBs of little sound bites that I have accumulated online. Having a strong and customized library of sounds if crucial to a music producer. You need to know where each sound is at any given point and Shaun points out the importance of this strongly. The next important addition that Shaun covers that I haven't really found anywhere else is the amazing detail in each and every aspect of FL Studio that Shaun covers. He covers each and every button, tab and slider. If you entered the music scene and knew nothing of how to work FL Studio let alone what a DAW is then you would learn so much about effects and other aspects of music production that are transcendent across all types of DAW's. Shaun actually shows you what each aspect of FL Studio is and what effect it provides so that even if you use it as a reference then you will always find some help in the book even if you're a pro or a newbie. Overall. I would recommend the book for anyone that has an interest in music production as a profession or as a hobby. It's full of everything that FL Studio should come with out of the box. In fact, the FL Studio Cookbook is the tutorial that should come with FL Studio once you buy it. I guarantee that you will either learn something new with the book or at least learn how to do something easier than how you're used to doing something in an elaborate DAW such as FL Studio. I honestly wish I had the FL Studio Cookbook when I started music let alone when I started playing with something as complicated and truly intimidating as FL Studio.- HaXxXo VtotheZwww.hakko86x.wix.com/haxxxovtothez

There is much debate over FL Studio tutorials. If you want to great book to explain what you "think" you already know, then this is it.

This is a fantastic book for FL begginers or mid level users. Covers all the steps from the more basic steps with practical examples. Each chapter is cleary divided in a logical parts: "Getting ready", "How to do it", "How it Works" and "There's more". You can find at the end a 2See also" paragraph that reffers other chapter where you can find more information and practical "recipes". Lots of tips and tricks are also spread along the book. A must have.https://www.packtpub.com/hardware-and-creative/fl-studio-cookbook?utm_source=fl%20studio%20general%20new&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=fl%20studio%20general%20new
