One of the major technology trends of recent years has been the migration to "cloud computing" – that is, rather than businesses owning and hosting all of the equipment and data centers needed to run their information systems, they effectively outsource the responsibility for the infrastructure to others. Businesses may utilize virtual machines on rented servers sitting at a third-party provider, or may use Software as a Service – paying to use third-party web-based applications rather than have to implement similar systems in house. They may sync and store files at a remote provider, or backup to a cloud-based provider using software that automatically runs and manages the backup processes.
