AWS Automation Cookbook

Building an Application using CodeBuild

In this chapter, the following recipes will be covered:

  • Introducing AWS CodeBuild
  • Building a Java application using Maven
  • Building a NodeJS application using yarn
  • Building a Maven application using AWS CodeBuild console
  • Building a sample NodeJS application using AWS CodeBuild via Buildspec.yml

Introduction

People working as Developer, DevOps, or SysOps hear a lot about the build of an application, screams that the build failed, and requests to not break the build all the time. So, what do they mean about the build? The developers write code and push it to a version control system such as GitHub, SVN, or CodeCommit. This source code needs to be analyzed and processed further so that it can be deployed to the production server or platform.

The processing step can be any of the following:

  1. Source code usually consists of classes, objects, methods, and functions. So, we have to compile and link them to make it in an installable or binary format.
  2. Running test cases or quality analysis on source code means that the source code will pass through the seven axes of code quality--duplication, code coverage, complexity, comments, bugs, unit test, and architecture and design...

Introducing AWS CodeBuild

When it comes to cloud-hosted and fully managed build services, which compiles our source code, runs unit tests, and produces artifacts that are ready to deploy, then AWS CodeBuild comes into the picture.

Instead of using Jenkins or Bamboo, we can use AWS CodeBuild, and then skip the following issues:

  • Setting up a Jenkins on a server and maintaining it
  • Maintaining the cluster security
  • Upgrading the Jenkins software over time
  • Monitoring and recovering from Jenkins downtime
  • Capacity planning so the cluster can handle all our build volume

If you setup the build server of your own, then you have to pay a big bill to the engineers to keep the cluster scaled up 24/7 and maintain the Jenkins cluster. If the build server will have any issues, then the team won't be able to ship the latest code, until the build server is fixed.

AWS CodeBuild is elastic...

Building a Java application using Maven

Maven provides benefits for our build process by employing standard conventions and practices to accelerate our software development cycle and help us to achieve a higher rate of success. We will now see the build of a Maven application.

Getting ready

To play around with the Java application and build it using Maven, we need JDK7/8 and Maven to be installed on our local machine.

Install Java and verify

In this section, we will be installing Java-8 and verify it:

[root@awsstar ~]# yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk -y
[root@awsstar ~...

Building a NodeJS application using yarn

NodeJS, built on Google Chrome's JavaScript engine, is a server-side platform developed by Ryan Dahl in 2009. It is widely used by lots of big enterprises due to its features. So, we will see how we can build the NodeJS application using yarn.

Getting ready

To play around with the NodeJS application and build it using yarn, we need to install NodeJS and a yarn package on our development machine.

Install NodeJS and verify

[root@awsstar ~]# curl --silent --location https://rpm.nodesource.com/setup_6.x | sudo bash -
[root@awsstar...

Building a Maven application using AWS CodeBuild console

In the previous section, we saw the brief steps of flow of work in CodeBuild. Now, let's try to build some real application with CodeBuild.

Getting ready

Before proceeding, make sure you clone the application from GitHub (https://github.com/awsstar/CB-Maven-App-UI.git) and create a new CodeCommit repository in your account and migrate the GitHub code to your CodeCommit repository.

The following are the details that we will be going to use in CodeBuild:

  • Source repository: AWS CodeCommit
    • Repository name: CB-MAVEN-Book
  • Build environment: AWS CodeBuild
    • Environment image: Image managed by AWS CodeBuild
    • OS: Ubuntu (only OS provided by CodeBuild)
    • Runtime: Java
    • Version...

Building a sample NodeJS application using AWS CodeBuild via Buildspec.yml

In the previous recipe, we saw how to build the application using AWS CodeBuild. However, in that case, we used the build commands (mvn install) in the console only, as shown in the following image:

When it comes to the complex scenario, it means we need more than one build commands and need to perform some additional operations in the build environment. For this, we use the buildspec.yml file.

Buildspec.yml

A build spec is a collection of build commands and related settings; in the YAML format, AWS CodeBuild is used to run a build. This file needs to be checked in with the root folder of the application code. This file will possess Build steps as...

Key benefits

  • • Accelerate your infrastructure's productivity by implementing a continuous delivery pipeline within your environment
  • • Leverage AWS services and Jenkins 2.0 to perform complete application deployments on Linux servers
  • • This recipe-based guide that will help you minimize application deployment downtime

Description

AWS CodeDeploy, AWS CodeBuild, and CodePipeline are scalable services offered by AWS that automate an application's build and deployment pipeline. In order to deliver tremendous speed and agility, every organization is moving toward automating their entire application pipeline. This book will cover all the AWS services required to automate your deployment to your instances. You'll begin by setting up and using one of the AWS services for automation –CodeCommit. Next, you'll learn how to build a sample Maven and NodeJS application using CodeBuild. After you've built the application, you'll see how to use CodeDeploy to deploy the application in EC2/Auto Scaling. You'll also build a highly scalable and fault tolerant Continuous Integration (CI)/Continuous Deployment (CD) pipeline using some easy-to-follow recipes. Following this, you'll achieve CI/CD for a microservice application and reduce the risk within your software development life cycle globally. You'll also learn to set up an infrastructure using CloudFormation templates and Ansible, and see how to automate AWS resources using AWS Lambda. Finally, you'll learn to automate instances in AWS and automate the deployment lifecycle of applications. By the end of this book, you'll be able to minimize application downtime and implement CI/CD, gaining total control over your software development lifecycle.

Who is this book for?

This book is for developers and system administrators who are responsible for hosting their application and managing instances in AWS. It’s also ideal for DevOps engineers looking to provide continuous integration, deployment, and delivery. A basic understanding of AWS, Jenkins, and some scripting knowledge is needed.

What you will learn

  • • Build a sample Maven and NodeJS Application using CodeBuild
  • • Deploy the application in EC2/Auto Scaling and see how CodePipeline helps you integrate AWS services
  • • Build a highly scalable and fault tolerant CI/CD pipeline

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:
