Amazon Web Services Bootcamp

Configuring IAM

 In this chapter, we will be covering the core security service of AWS—AWS IAM. Identity and Access Management, referred to as IAM, is a central part, which surrounds all AWS services. For an enterprise, big or small, data security is the most important aspect that needs to be tightened. In this chapter, we will demonstrate how we can create and administer IAM users, groups, roles, and policies using AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, AWS SDK – Java, and CloudFormation.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Policies
  • Roles
  • Groups
  • Users

Identity and Access Management (IAM) is the most important service of the AWS cloud. It is used to provide access to other AWS resources. Each AWS resource has access restrictions and permissions that are being governed by IAM. It allows us to provide granular-level permissions to users or AWS resources...

Policies

A Policy is a JSON document that contains a list of permissions to allow or deny access to AWS resources. A single policy can be attached to one or more IAM user, group, and role. AWS IAM Policies provides the following two types of policies:

  • AWS Managed Policies: These policies are governed by AWS. These policies are created for common use cases so that IT administrators can directly use these policies instead of creating new ones.
  • Customer Managed Policies: These policies are custom made under your AWS account. The customer can define specific resource-based permissions and can modify them as and when needed.

The following is the sample customer-managed policy document:

{
    "Version": "2012-10-17",
    "Statement": [
        {
            "Effect": "Allow",
            "Action": [
               ...

Role

AWS IAM Role allows an entity to assume a role and get the permissions to access the AWS resources. The entity can be a federated user, a cross-account user, or an AWS resource. Consider we have an Amazon EC2 instance as an Entity and want to access Amazon S3. So to get access, we need to attach the IAM Role (having permissions to access S3) to our EC2 instance. So now, the EC2 instance can assume the role and get the permissions to access S3.

Let's look at different ways to create the AWS IAM Role.

AWS Management Console

The AWS Management Console allows us to create and manage the Role.

Creating a role

...

Group

AWS IAM Group allows us to group multiple policies together, which can then be attached to IAM Users. This group provides the flexibility to IT administrators to manage groups based on admins, developers, teams, departments, or organizations. The group contains a list of policies, which contain permissions to access AWS resources.

Let's look at different ways to create the AWS IAM Group.

AWS Management Console

The AWS Management Console allows us to create and manage the groups.

Creating a group

Create a new group under your AWS account using the following steps...

Users

IAM User is an entity, which will be accessing AWS resources. The entity can be a person or an application that needs fixed credentials to access AWS resources. The IAM user allows us to generate credentials to access the AWS Management Console or generate programmatic access credentials to access from AWS CLI or AWS SDK. The IAM User can have Groups or Policies attached to get the required AWS resource permissions.

Let's look at different ways to create AWS IAM Users.

AWS Management Console

The AWS Management Console allows us to create and manage the Users.

Summary

In this chapter, we have covered how to create and manage AWS Identity and Access Management. We learned about IAM policy, role, group, and user using AWS Management Console, CLI, and SDK Java. IAM is a core part of AWS services, which provides security and permissions to access AWS services.

In the next chapter, we will be learning about EC2 and how we can build scalable applications on EC2.
