Device control

MDE device control monitors and controls removable media to protect against data loss. Originally, device control in Windows only allowed for blocking removable storage devices. Then, controls were added for increased granularity and other device types to cover more use cases—and other platforms, starting with macOS.

The following table provides an overview of the main components of device control:

  • Audit/block any combination of Read and Write and Execute access to any removable storage (USB/CDROM/SD/SCSI/iPhone/and so on) but allow specific ones based on device ID, bus type, serial number, instance ID, PID/VID, and so on.
  • Only allow a specific user or user group access to specific removable storage on a specific machine or on a shared machine.
